The MP for York Central, Labour’s Rachael Maskell, has told the Health Minister, Helen Whately, that the Conservatives “have broken the NHS and broken the staff.”
She was speaking in the commons this afternoon (via video link) during a statement made by the Minister.
Ms Maskell said: “I’ve never known the NHS to be under such extreme pressure, mental health needs are unmet and NHS waiting list are through the roof.
“GPs are completely overrun and unable to cope and there is no solution to our social care crisis.”

Ms Maskell added:
“In the shadow of this, the Minister should be ashamed to bring such a vacuous statement today.
“Will she now immediately enter into urgent cross party talks as to how we rescue this disastrous mess before both staff and patients bear further sacrifice.”

In reply Helen Whately said:
“I don’t actually agree with the honourable lady’s description of the situation. I think it’s clearly absolutely true to say that our NHS staff and our social care staff have done tremendous things during the pandemic.
“Clearly we have COVID still with us and they have gone above and beyond, time and again.
“It’s been important that we have put in place extra support, we will continue to make extra support for those staff available.
“And on pay, we will be announcing our decision in due course.”
