York on YouTube: YorkMix picks of the week

A taste of history… Lawrence laps up York Minster
We know you don’t want to waste your office hours watching interesting YouTube videos when you could be working on the financials for the next quarter. So we’ve wasted those hours on your behalf.

No: don’t thank us. Just doing our job, ma’am.

Here’s our latest selection of York-themed YouTube videos for you to enjoy, this week featuring the return of the Cathedral Licker, an astonishing somersault and some great old footage of two lost worlds – steam trains and the John Bull pub.

Seen some great York footage online? Let us know in the comments.

Here’s licking at you, kid

When we first revealed Lawrence Edmonds’ amazing quest to lick every cathedral in the UK, few could believe it. But now he’s collected all the pix and footage of the English leg of the quest together into one bonkers video. We can see this being optioned by Hollywood, with Brad Pitt as Lawrence and Philip Seymour Hoffman as Southwell Minster.

Flippin’ Nora

Short but sweet, this spin doctor is Josh McGahan, a physical performer from York who goes by the name of Munks. Don’t try this at home. In fact, don’t try it anywhere.

Can’t beat a bit of Bully

When our pubs and beer expert Nick Love wrote about the drinking scene in York when he arrived in the city, he made special mention of the John Bull pub. That led Lisa from the fab York Stories website to Tweet us a link to this cracking Old Dairy Studios film of the much-missed boozer. Part Two can be seen here.

Chuffing wonderful

A real gem from the archives of British Transport Films, this shows some evocative scenes of York from the Fifties before moving into the railway station. Here boys in blazers buy platform tickets to spot the latest steam locomotives, WH Smith is a wooden kiosk, the station master dons a top hat and wheelchairs look to be made from converted cinema seats. Look out too for some footage of the former carriageworks.
