York Opera returns to York Theatre Royal to stage Mozart’s last opera The Magic Flute.

The opera was first performed in 1791 – the year of Mozart’s death.

It is one of the few operas by the composer that includes spoken dialogue and that were originally written in German as opposed to Italian.

The story follows Prince Tamino and his quest to rescue his beloved Pamina from the grasp of her mother, the evil Queen of the Night, and return with her to the world of light presided over by Sarastro, the High Priest of Isis and Osiris.

Billed as an ‘operatic pantomime’, this could be a great introduction for a first visit to the opera for all ages.

York Opera strive to make opera accessible and pride themselves on being all-inclusive.

The Magic Flute is directed by long-serving member of York Opera John Soper, with musical direction from Derek Chivers.

Among the many soloists are Mark Simmonds (High Priest Sarastro), Heather Watts (Queen of Night), Hamish Brown (Prince Tamino) and Alexandra Mather (Pamina).

David Valsamidis, a new young singer, makes his York Opera debut as Papageno, the Queen of the Night’s birdcatcher.

There’s no better time to make a trip to the opera!

Tickets for The Magic Flute start at £10 and can be purchased via the York Theatre Royal website.
