Today Edward Timpson, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Children and Families, has published national adoption scorecards for all Local Authorities. The scorecards have been introduced as part of the Government’s ‘Action Plan for Adoption’ which set out targets to improve the speed of adoptions.
City of York Council is ranked highly and its highlights include:
- For the speed at which children entering care are able to move in with an adoptive family, York is ranked 6th best in England and the best in the region and North of England.
- For the time taken from receiving court authority to place a child in care and then finding an adoptive family match, York is again the best in the region.

Councillor Janet Looker, Cabinet member for Education, Children and Young People said, ‘I am delighted with these results and they demonstrate the way in which the city continues to rise to the challenge of improving adoption processes and eradicating delays. I know that our Children’s Services, partners and foster parents, work hard together to ensure that those children in need of adoption are found permanent and loving homes as quickly as possible’.
The Council is set to embark on a programme to encourage more people to consider both fostering and adoption of children.
Eoin Rush, Assistant Director for Children’s Specialist Services said, ‘The results that the Government have published today remind us of the important role that families in York play in the adoption and fostering of children. We welcome the opportunity to talk to residents who want to explore how adoption and fostering services are delivered in York.’
