Six Norwegian choirs are due in the city for the two-day Scandinavian Choral Festival. Getting the festival off to a pitch perfect start will be a choral singing contest at the Guildhall in St Helen’s Square from 7.30pm to 9pm on Friday, May 24.
The following day from 10am to noon in Coppergate Square the six choirs will perform pop melodies and folk tunes for 15 to 20 minutes each.
And from 6.30pm to 9pm at Central Methodist Church on St Saviourgate the choirs will take to the stage with the York Philharmonic Male Voice Choir to sing pop, folklore and church music throughout the evening.
The weekend-long choral festival will culminate in a series of church performances on Sunday 26 May. Participating churches include St George’s, English Martyrs, St Clements and Holy Trinity on Micklegate.
The Scandinavian Choral Festival is organised by Sabra Tours in partnership with Visit York.
Visit York chief executive Gillian Cruddas said: “Saturday’s performance at Central Methodist Church will be a spectacular choral celebration, featuring our very own York Philharmonic Male Voice Choir, and I’m delighted to be compering the evening.”
The six Norwegian choirs performing at the festival comprise Beatleskoret, Harstad Mannskor, Mallembygd Mannskor, Høybråten Damekor, Ås Korforening and Paradur Damekor.
