Three concerts, staged by York Arts Academy, took place on Saturday, December 1, at the campus’s Central Hall. The morning show was kicked off by First Strings, who played Bobby Shaftoe and two polkas.
They were followed by the Singing Squad from Yearsley Grove Primary School, who donned Santa hats and tinsel to sing Winter Wonderland. Next, the folk group the Celtic Daggers played five songs, including two polkas they had learned by ear and played without music.
Finally the String Orchestra performed four pieces, including the Wallace And Gromit Theme and Ding Dong Merrily On High, before leading the audience singing three carols.
The afternoon concert featured music played by York Arts Academy bands, African drummers, a guitar ensemble and choirs from Huntington, Fishergate and St. Aelreds primary schools. In the evening, senior ensembles including York Arts Academy Symphony Orchestra, the Senior Concert Band and Big Band, a string quartet and early music from the Minster Minstrels, performed.
It was a musical extravaganza which demonstrated the hard work and talent of the young people and their teachers at York Arts Academy.
