York’s best new buildings named – including the one you voted for

York Minster’s Centre of Excellence for Heritage Skills has been crowned the city’s best new building at the 17th annual York Design Awards.

The recently completed building, on the Minster Estate, won the Lord Mayor’s Award, the top accolade at a prestigious awards ceremony held at the City Screen Picturehouse.  

Other winners on the night included the Bustardthorpe development at York Racecourse in the sustainability category, Raffles Hall in the large residential category and the Cocoa Works won the public realm award.

The YorkMix People’s Choice awards – decided by public vote on our website – was also won by the Centre of Excellence.  

The Young People’s Choice Awards, voted by people under 18, was awarded to Eden House in Earswick.

The Centre of Excellence for Heritage Craft Skills and Estate Management has established the York Minster Precinct as a world-class campus facility for research, education and training in traditional craft skills.

It is creating capacity to allow world-class stonemasons from the Minster to undertake commissions for other heritage estates utilising state-of-the-art cutting technology.

The 17th York Design Awards showcased the city’s architectural excellence, celebrating projects that exemplify innovation, sustainability, and respect for York’s rich heritage.

Ann Reid, chair of the York Design Awards, said: “The Centre of Excellence was a worthy winner of the prestigious Lord Mayor’s Award and is a fantastic addition to the city.

“I would like to congratulate all the winners in the respective categories as the entries this year were top class.

“We had more than 600 votes in the YorkMix People’s Choice and Young Person’s awards, and I would like to thank everyone who took the time to vote.”
