Yorkshire Water is investing £320,000 into a growing York village, with work beginning this month.

The investment will see new pipes laid in Poppleton, to improve resilience in the water network ahead of the planned new residential developments.

The work will be done alongside their contract partner United Living.

The new pipes will replace the smaller existing water mains, to ensure the network is ready to meet the demands of the new homes.

Nicola Fairbarn, project manager at Yorkshire Water, said: : “It’s important that our water network keeps up in areas that are seeing so much local economic growth, like Poppleton.

“The investment we’re making here will ensure the future delivery of high-quality, high-pressure clean water supply for those in the area.”

The work is scheduled to start on Monday 9th September, with completion expected in November this year.

During the first two weeks of work, temporary traffic lights will be at the junction of Boroughbridge Road and Low Poppleton Lane.

One of the footpaths along Poppleton lane will also be closed for the duration of the project.

Nichola added: “We thank road users and pedestrians in advance for their patience and understanding whilst we undertake these necessary works.”

The investment in the clean water network follows a £2.1m project in the village to reduce storm overflow discharges into the river Ouse, as Yorkshire Water continues its efforts to improve river water quality.

Contractors are currently constructing new underground wastewater storage in fields off Main Street.

Once completed, an eight-metre deep tank will hold more than 250,000 litres of wastewater during periods of heavy rainfall.

This, in turn, will reduce discharges into the Ouse from the Riverside Gardens storm overflow by more than 50 percent.
